Date and time: Tuesday, 20 May at 13:00
Venue: Hybrid (M6) link
Organisers: UNODC Research and Trend Analysis Branch with the support of France, Peru and UNICRI
The 34th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) will host a side event on Tuesday, 20 May at 13:00 CET, marking the launch of the latest section of the Global Analysis on Crimes that Affect the Environment, with a particular focus on minerals crime.
Held in a hybrid format at the Vienna International Centre (M6) and online, the event is organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Research and Trend Analysis Branch, with the support of France, Peru, and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI).
The session will open with remarks from Ms. Candice Welsch, Director of the Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs at UNODC. Ms. Angela Me, Chief of the Research and Trend Analysis Branch, will present the study, followed by remarks from H.E. Ms. María Eugenia Echeverría, Ambassador of Peru to the United Nations in Vienna. Mr. Leif Villadsen, Acting Director of UNICRI, will provide commentary on the findings.
The study sheds light on the complex and evolving nature of crimes related to critical minerals. It examines the broad spectrum of actors involved - from organised criminal groups to private sector entities - and exposes key vulnerabilities in the illegal gold supply chain. It also explores the emerging risks associated with the global energy transition and the rising demand for critical minerals.
This launch aims to stimulate dialogue among Member States, experts, and stakeholders on addressing environmental crimes linked to the minerals sector and to encourage informed responses based on evidence and collaboration.
Join the event in person or online on 20 May at 13:00 CET.
