Susanna Schlein

Susanna Schlein is the Head of the Unit for Strategies and Multilateral Global Processes in the General Directorate for Development Cooperation at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

 

Born in Switzerland in 1978, she studied Political Science at the University of Pavia. In 2003 she entered the Italian diplomatic service, where she initially served in the Multilateral Division of the Directorate General for Political Affairs. In 2006 she was appointed Consul in Saarbrücken and in 2010 she moved to the Italian Embassy in Tirana, as Head of the Consular Desk and EU Affairs Office. From 2014 to 2017 she was back in Rome and served in the Directorate General for Development Cooperation, Division for Budget, Programming and Strategic Affairs. In 2017 she moved once again to Germany, serving as Social Counsellor in the Italian Embassy in Berlin, and four years later, in 2021, she was appointed Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Italy in Athens.

 

She speaks Italian, English, German, French, and basic Greek.

 

She is married and has two children.
