Overview
The experience of UNICRI in supporting Member States to build effective rehabilitation programmes for violent extremists has highlighted the need to further enhance reintegration measures within and beyond custodial settings.
The Youth Consultation brought together 24 female and 26 male youth leaders, between the ages of 15 and 29, from 38 countries and five continents, with experience in the fields of sport, peacebuilding and/or the prevention of violent extremism (PVE).
On 7 November 2020, a call-for-proposals was launched by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), within the framework of the UN Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events, and Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism implemented by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), in partnership with UNICRI, the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Centre for Sport and Security (ICSS).
UNICRI, in close coordination with partner countries and thanks to the financial contribution of the Government of Japan, has recently concluded a project aimed at facilitating the adoption of diversion and alternative measures to reduce juveniles’ recruitment in criminal and terrorist organizations. The initiative integrated the prevention dimension in the legal and judiciary systems of the partner countries involved.
Within the framework of the project Mali (Dis-) Engagement and Re-Integration related to Terrorism (MERIT), UNICRI and the International Center for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT-The Hague), in close collaboration with Think Peace Sahel, Conseil National de la Jeunesse, International Alert, and SNV-ICCO-OXFAM, have developed a set of engagement and empowerment training sessions addressed to young people to promote alternatives to violence.
In August 2016, UNICRI conducted an assessment mission in Mali to present its programme on Rehabilitation & Reintegration of Violent Extremist Offenders (VEOs), developed within the framework of the UN Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force (CTITF).
