The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) announces the launch of the COuRAGE project. COuRAGE is a 24-month project funded, under Europe’s 7th framework programme for research, to develop a research agenda for Cyber Crime and Cyber Terrorism (CC/CT).
COuRAGE brings together 17 experienced partners under the coordination and leadership of Engineering Ingegneria Informatica SPA based in Italy. Using the expertise of the consortium partners, advisory board members and recruited expert stakeholders, COuRAGE will produce a research agenda for Cyber Crime and Cyber Terrorism.
Cyber Crime’s impact on the global economy
A recent report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies and McAfee Inc., found that cybercrime can cost the global economy as much as $575 billion per year. But Cyber Terrorism is also being seen as the new weapon of mass destruction. A cyber-attack on critical infrastructures or stock exchanges can have broad consequences on European society.
The European Union is responding to these threats by funding projects such as COuRAGE to identify research, regulatory and technological roadmaps to combat Cyber Crime and Cyber Terrorism.
The COuRAGE research agenda will identify the major challenges; reveal research gaps for Cyber Crime and Cyber Terrorism. And recommend practical research approaches to address these gaps through strategies that are aligned to real-world needs. The purpose of COuRAGE is to significantly improve the security of European citizens, critical infrastructures and support crime investigators.
