ICAT statement of the Inter-Agency Coordination Group against Trafficking in Persons on the World Day against Trafficking
On the occasion of the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, the Inter-Agency Coordination Group against Trafficking in Persons (ICAT) calls on governments to better address the misuse of internet and information technology to facilitate human trafficking, and harness the potential of technology to enhance investigations and prosecutions of perpetrators, as well as the provision of assistance to victims.
Within the framework of the 28th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect in partnership with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Research Institute (UNICRI), is organising a side event on hate speech and violent extremism.
The side event, entitled “Hate Speech and Violent Extremism as Driving Factors Leading to Violence and Atrocity Crimes” will take place on 23 May at the Vienna International Centre (Conference Room M7) from 2.20 to 3.10 p.m.
In 2008 UNICRI and the Municipality of Bari signed an agreement in order to carry out the project Picturing Victimization in the City of Bari/Italy. The project envisaged the implementation of an empirical comparative Survey on victimization risks and urban crime. In particular, the research focused on the magnitude of the phenomenon of predatory crimes and on the perception of security in the City.
Trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants are serious crimes entailing multiple violations of human rights. Trafficking in persons is the deliberate exploitation of human beings and is considered as modern slavery, taking the form of forced labour, sexual exploitation, forced marriage, prostitution, forced begging, sale of organs, bonded labour or debt bondage and the unlawful recruitment and use of child soldiers. This is a phenomenon of global concern because it affects the majority of the countries in the world.
