On July 18, 2024, the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) Global Training Academy, the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence Initiative (EU CBRN CoE), and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) will host a webinar on the prosecution of radiological and nuclear crimes.
The Webinar will explore the challenges involved in investigating and prosecuting these grave offenses and discuss best practice mechanisms that can aid prosecutors. It will also review resources available to assist prosecutors, including the Prosecutor's Guide to Radiological and Nuclear Crimes developed by UNICRI and funded by the European Commission.

The European Union (EU) Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (CoE) is a global Initiative funded and implemented by the European Union as part of its goal to promote peace, stability and conflict prevention. Aim of the Initiative is to mitigate risks and strengthen an all-hazards security governance in Partner Countries of the EU following a voluntary and demand-driven approach. The EU CBRN CoE is led by the European Commission’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI), in close coordination with the European External Action Service (EEAS). The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides technical support to Partner Countries, while the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) ensures a coherent and effective national, regional and international cooperation.
The International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) is the only worldwide organization of prosecutors. It was established in 1995 and now has more than 183 organizational members from over 177 different countries, representing every continent, as well as many individual members. The IAP was established in June 1995 at the United Nations offices in Vienna. The main impetus leading to its formation was the rapid growth in serious transnational crime; particularly drug trafficking, money laundering and fraud. The IAP is an international community of prosecutors committed to setting and raising standards of professional conduct and ethics for prosecutors worldwide, promoting the rule of law, fairness, impartiality, and respect for human rights, and improving international cooperation to combat crime
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research (UNICRI) is mandated to advance security, serve justice, and build peace in support of the rule of law and sustainable development. UNICRI works in specialized niches and selected areas related to crime prevention, criminal justice, security governance, counter-terrorism and the risks and benefits of technological advances.
In 2006, UNICRI established the CBRN Risk Mitigation and Security Governance Unit to assist Member States to anticipate, assess and mitigate CBRN threats. In 2022 UNICRI, in cooperation with international partners including the IAP, developed a Prosecutors Guide to Chemical and Biological Crimes. It was fully funded by the European Union with the framework of its CBRN Centres of Excellence Initiative. A second guide, the Prosecutors Guide to Radiological and Nuclear Crimes, has also been developed and published in 2024.
